How do clear braces work?
Millions of patients have transformed their smile with Invisalign. The treatment is based on wearing a series of clear plastic aligner trays to re-align your teeth. Treatment is fully customised and a sequence of trays is made to move your teeth to their desired positions. This can be for your top and bottom teeth combined, or top or bottom. Thanks to the innovation of clear braces it’s now possible to get a beautiful straight smile wit no interruptions or restrictions. There’s also no need to feel self conscious about wearing braces as the aligners are practically invisible. Many patients choose clear braces for this reason – because they feel clear braces are socially acceptable. Traditional braces are highly visible and limit the foods and drinks you can have, and take a lot longer to clean each day.
If you’re unhappy with your smile or missed out on braces as a teenager, you can now get the smile and confidence you’re looking for without the hassle. For teens it’s common to have braces, but for adults clear aligners have provide a whole new choice. There is no barrier to having a great smile. The length of treatment can be up to 18 months therefore having clear braces without feeling self conscious is a huge advantage.
Additionally, some dental experts consider clear braces to be superior in performance and results achieved. In terms of patient reviews – the satisfaction ratings are very high both during treatment and after. As there are no interruptions or restrictions and because patients can smile during their treatment, as well as being delighted with their new smile after treatment.
Many patients wonder if they will be suitable for treatment – the system can treat all orthodontic issues, like traditional braces. But the key is that the aligners are removable and transparent so they are virtually invisible.
The options available are:
Invisalign Full – the original and most commonly used system. Full can treat a wide range of issues. Treatment lasts 12 – 18 months on average, with 20 to 30 trays used.
Invisalign i7 – designed for minor adjustments and is based on 7 sets of aligners. Treatment can can be as short as 12 weeks.
Invisalign Teen – designed for teenagers and based on Full. Made with wear markers to ensure sufficient wear time and allows adult teeth to erupt.
Invisalign Lite – Lite is between i7 and Full and treats moderate cases. Average treatment time is 7 months on average.
Treatment can re-align teeth to correct the following concerns:
Crowding: teeth can become overcrowded and pushed together if there is not enough space. Teeth can be pushed at varying angles, making it hard to clean all surfaces. Crowding can cause uneven wear, staining and gum disease. This can affect upper, lower or both arches.
Gaps: gaps can appear if teeth are missing or if jaws have continued to grow resulting in too much space.
Cross bite: This is when the upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth and can cause uneven wear and gum disease.
Over bite: When the top teeth go over bottom teeth, and this can cause jaw pain and other conditions.
Under bite: The bottom teeth reach over the top teeth, this can lead to jaw pain and other conditions.
Why do people choose clear braces?
Patients who are unhappy or self conscious about their smile want to straighten their teeth. Many choose clear braces as the trays are transparent and removable. They are also comfortable to wear with no irritation or soreness and movements are gentle and gradual.
You can smile during your treatment and enjoy your new smile after your treatment. Patients are very excited and motivated to see their new smile develop as the weeks go by. There are no metal wires or brackets to cause irritation or make you feel self conscious. You’ll be able to choose if you want to tell people about your treatment or not. Most of our patients say that no one actually noticed anything.

Some people shop around for deals and discounts, but this is not recommended as the results you achieve will depend on the expertise of the dentist as well as the technology. Sites such as Groupon can include offers but the leading dentists who have a proven track record do not necessarily use discount sites. Your smile is an asset and to achieve the best results, you should choose based on reputation and track record.

Day to day with clear braces
Patients are surprised when seeing their aligners for the first time and very happy at how clear and invisible the clear braces actually are. Getting used to wearing aligners is easy and fast. They need to be worn for at least 22 hours a day. They need to be worn at all times unless eating and drinking, apart from drinking cold water at which time they can be kept in. Aligners are not designed to be worn for biting or chewing or eating or drinking. You’ll change up to the next aligner in the sequence every 2 weeks as per your treatment plan. You will notice changes to your smile week by week and you can take and upload photos to the Align Tech app which patients say is very motivating. The daily wear time can’t be lowered by a longer treatment time – as this will not achieve the best results. Treatment plans should be followed for the best results.
