All right – that doesn’t sound like much, especially if you’re more than 25 pounds overweight. Study after study has shown, though, that those people who lose weight gradually – at a rate of 1-2 pounds per week -are far more likely to keep the weight off and maintain a normal weight for a lifetime.

So how much exactly IS 500 calories? If you’re going to reduce your daily intake by 500 calories, it helps to know what you need to cut out, right? Here is how you lose 500 calories a day

* Use milk instead of cream in your coffee. Savings? 50 calories in each cup.

* Skip the butter on your baked potato. Savings? 100 calories

* Drink fruit-flavored water instead of a 16 ounce soda. Savings? 200 calories

* Skip the Big Mac and have a salad instead. A Big Mac weighs in at a whopping 460 calories. Have a fresh salad along with a light dressing? Under 100! Savings? 360 calories

If you want to look at losing weight from an exercise perspective then what you can do is up your activity level by 500 calories and you will be able to lose a pound a week. How easy is that to do? Take a look:

* Get out your bike and take a ride. Tackle a few moderate hills and aim for about five miles total. Burn: 250 calories

* Play a game of tennis. If you and a friend meet up once a week for something like a tennis game you will be amazed at the difference. An hour of vigorous tennis is one of the most effective calorie burners that are around. Burn: 800 calories

Keep in mind that all of the exercise and calorie numbers are based on a woman’s weight of 130 pounds. If you weigh more then you will definately burn more fat. Why is it that every time you hear people talk about losing fat they say that the maximum amount of fat you can safely lose is two pounds per week. How does one burn fat fast and short time periods?

The truth of matter is that 2 pounds per week is not the maximum amount of fat you can safely lose in week. It is only a recommendation from the fitness gurus. The actual fat you can lose depends on many different factors. For instance weight loss is relative to how tall you are and how fast your metabolism is.

Weight loss is an extremely meaningless term unless you talk about it in context of body composition period for instance the fat to muscle ratio, or the water to weight ratio.

So how do you lose more than 2 pounds per week?

It is possible to lose for you more than 2 pounds per week of pure body fat. However, it is easier at the beginning and harder as you progress through your diet.My rule is that incredible results require you to put in incredible effort. This means that you’ll have to be committed to your diet and stick to your workout schedule.  Now if you want to lose more than 2 pounds per week you simply need a bigger calorie deficit. For instance, if 2,500 calories is your daily maintenance level and you want to drop 3 pounds of body fat per week with just a diet then you’ll need a daily deficit of 1500 calories. This means that you should be eating 1000 calories per day. Now you would lose a massive amount of weight if you could maintain this deficit. However, most people will not be able to last long on this little amount of food. The other option is to train for insane amounts of time.

So what is the answer? Train harder or eat less.

My approach to this problem is a long-term weight control. This means patiently following a nutrition plan that is well-balanced between lean protein, natural carbs and healthy fats. There’s no magic and no quick fix to losing body fat but there aren’t many different methods that are proven to work. Never skip meals. If you do your body thinks that it’s starving, and breaks into slow metabolism mode. A slow metabolism is the enemy of fat burning. Another way to avoid slow metabolism is to make sure to eat enough every day. For most people this means consume a minimum of 1200 calories each day. Any fewer and your body is back in starvation mode, working against your efforts to burn fat.

Fat burning workouts combined with healthy eating can have amazing results. They don’t have to be difficult. Too hard is bad because when a work out is too hard people quit. Too many people get hyped up on working out after Christmas, or just before the summer beach season, but don’t even make it for a month before the difficult workouts ground them into quitting.
