Mr. Blake was one of the health teachers at a small rural community college in the far Western part of the United States. For “Alcohol Insight Month” he decided that he would focus on the following three topics for a class assignment: alcoholism symptoms, alcoholic symptoms, and alcoholism statistics.

After Mr. Blake finished the topics that would be dispensed to his students, he determined that he would furnish them with their assignment the following Tuesday morning.

When “assignment day” eventually came, Mr. Blake met with his students, handed out some relevant facts and information, and then informed his pupils about the topics he decided upon.

Mr. Blake informed the students in his classroom that they could consider focusing on one of the three topics or discuss all three topics and how they are interlinked. In effect this would be similar to a simple overview but done in a more far-reaching fashion.

Another selection that he gave to his class was the following: take a topic such as alcohol dependency signs and symptoms, explore things more comprehensively, and then discuss two or three symptoms and signs. Mr. Blake then talked about the fact that the same rationale applies to the other two topics, namely, alcoholic symptoms and alcoholism statistics.

The end result of their study would be a fifteen thousand word essay and then a ten minute oral presentation that would be given in front of the class.

As appreciation for their excellent intellectual achievement, those with the top two overall grades on the term paper and on the oral presentation will be invited to present the results of their research project at the regional drug and alcohol abuse symposium during the last week of January.

After the students were given the facts about their assignment, quite of few of them raised their hands and asked for an illustration of a sub-topic that they could focus on for their research.

In response, Mr. Blake determined that he would quickly talk about three or four alcohol dependency symptoms and signs that the students could expand upon.

Mr. Blake’s hope was that by asking all of his pupils to explore one or more of the three alcoholism topics, all the pupils would have greater comprehension of a multifaceted yet noteworthy topic such as alcoholism.

Mr. Blake also thought that by elevating the comprehension of his students about the destructive effects of alcoholism and the disappointing lifestyles experienced by alcoholics, his students might think more intelligently before they get bogged down with abusive and irresponsible drinking behavior.
