The American Association of Orthodontists conducted a survey which showed that around 10 percent of patients going to orthodontists are adults, and these findings support the American Board of Orthodontics’s conclusion that more and more adults are seeking treatment for their mouths and teeth. A dentist from Washington explains that this is all just a case of the level of sophistication a person may have on this area. For a big number of adults, having braces done was perceived to be impossible at their ages, but all that changed when they saw others their age wearing them. We can call this word of mouth advertising, the dentist’s colleague from Manhattan says. To be sure, adults are referred by dentists, in hopes that orthodontic care will prevent such problems as gum disease and tooth loss or aid in such processes as chewing and cleaning. What patients are more concerned about is how a mouthful of metal will serve them in terms of looks rather than health. It is because of their desire to look more attractive that adults have their teeth wired and banded.
According to a secretary from Detroit, lack of money kept her from getting braces as a child and vanity kept her from getting braces as an adult, but she remained conscious about her crooked teeth. Dental insurance reduced the cost of the orthodontic program that this now 40 year old signed up for, so that she only paid $800 instead of $1,300. Orthodontists don’t find such investments to be unusual at all. One of the things orthodontists want their adult patients to know is that the treatment for adults would take a longer time, and would usually be more expensive. How much the treatment would be would depend on where the treatment is being done and what the situation of the person’s case is.
